After four years, the wait is over, and we are mere days away from the world’s greatest sports betting event, the 2010 World Cup. As you get set to start your World Cup betting, let’s take a look at some of the favorites in this year’s tournament.
1- Spain (+400): The Spanish come into this tournament riding high, after taking down the 2008 Euro Cup with a 1-0 victory over Germany, and going undefeated during World Cup qualifying. Not a bad way to enter the 2010 Cup.
In that 2008 Euro Final, the star of the show was forward Fernando Torres, as he scored the game winning goal, and enters this tournament as one of the most feared scorers in the world. Torres plays his club futbol for Liverpool. He scored 18 goals and added three assists during this last Premier League season. He comes into this World Cup with experience on the world’s biggest stage as well, scoring three World Cup goals in 2006.
Adding to the depth of Spain is David Villa, while Xavi controls the midfield like few others. And Iker Casillas may be the best goalie in this tournament.
Spain opens in a relatively easy Group H, and should be able to comfortably advance to the Round of 16.
There’s a reason La Furia Roja is the favorite in this tournament. Make them your World Cup bet today.
2- Brazil (+450): While Spain might have the most talent in their starting lineup, from top to bottom it might be Brazil with the most talent overall.
In the midfield, look for Kaka (2007 FIFA Player of the Year) and Robinho to control the offense, with Lucio and Maicon flanking the defense. Brazil did suffer a major scare in a recent 3-0 friendly win over Zimbabwe when starting goalie Julio Cesar left the game with injury, although he’s expected to be ok.
The only concern with betting on Brazil is this: They are playing in what looks like the toughest opening group of anyone, as they’ll face both Portugal and the Ivory Coast in their opening matches, meaning that if they stumble early, they might - might being the key word- be in trouble.
Still, look for the Brazilians to win their group and play late into this tournament. They won it all in 1994 and 2002. Can this be their third Cup in the last five tries?
3- Argentina (+600): Argentina enters this Cup with as much uncertainty as any contender. On one hand, they’ve got the best player in the world, Lionel Messi; and the most recognizable coach in this tournament, former Argentinean superstar Diego Maradona. However, leading up to the World Cup, few know how much those two actually get along.
Still, anytime you place a wager on Messi, it’s always a good bet. The Barcelona forward scored 34 goals in 30 Spanish League games this past season, and already has a sparkling international career at the age of 22. Messi was part of both an under-20 World FIFA World Youth Championship team in 2005, as well as Argentina’s Gold Medal winners in the 2008 Olympics. In between, he became the youngest Argentine to ever play in a World Cup in 2006.
The odds on Argentina might be a bit longer than Spain and Brazil. But for the price you’re getting them at BetUS Sportsbook, there might not be a better World Cup bet on the board.
